DIRECT, DRIFT, DIVERGE
This work is a physical representation of the optical phenomenon known as a mirage. Light rays bend and refract to reveal a distorted perception of the landscape, perhaps manifesting a desire to be somewhere else.Looking through the glass, patches of green and blue start to blur. The window feels hot. I focus my eyes on a straight line of silver liquid hovering above the road…

…waves of light float on the water, slowly dissolving on the surface. I watch the membrane continuously stretch and re-shape itself, struggling to separate contrasting temperatures…

…an oasis appears in the distance–a sparkling pool of water bordered by an uneven rock face. A drop of sweat falls from my temple and I roll down the window. Palms sway. But is it real, or merely a trick of the light?
